January (Page 1) 2010
Here we go again, last year was quite exciting and this year is shaping up rather well. This great tit has been roosting in bird box 1 for some time now

The box has been checked out by the blue tits but the greats seem to have won the day at least so far

This is an early morning picture just as the lights came on in the box

This wren has been showing great interest in all the boxes, as you can see this is bird box 1

It has also shown an interest in the Honeysuckle box

The mealworm feeder

And the Robin box, This box used last year by a family of Robins, had 4 chicks safely fledge, now the box has been replaced with a new one

This Robin box, has also been checked out by the blue tits

And the great tits

And especially by this Sparrow

This sparrow has been removing the old material left over from the robin nest. The box has also been checked out by Robins but as yet we have only seen the tip of its beak

Bird box 2, on the other hand, has been taken by the blue tits

This is a male showing off to the blue tit female on the outside, she did enter briefly

This bird has now taken to roosting in this box at night

As you can see, all the small birds start checking for nesting and roosting sites NOW!!!. If you are thinking of putting up a nest box, do it NOW!! It makes a really good present for young or old, and is very educational, especially if it has a camera in it, watch you're own Springwatch on you're TV or PC.

A good bird box, or hedgehog box can be had by clicking the following link, they also supply cameras you can fit to you're bird box, wired or wireless, a wide selection with all that you would need to set this up, from cables to software, Boxes are UK made, there unique design does away with the need for lights, and are very reasonable priced.

The last few days we have had a fair bit of snow, not often seen this far south, you can just see a song thrush in the top right of this photo

Then we had even more snow, this heavy fall brought in all manner of new species to our feeders, water and food

As luck would have it we had some fruit left over from Christmas and we through out an apple. We have put apples out before, but they had never been eaten. Not the case this time

This beautiful Fieldfare turned up, and ate the first apple, very quickly

Since then, we have had to brave the snow and get some more apples

It spends a lot of time chasing all the blackbirds out of the garden, it does not like blackbirds it seems, and we do get quite a few

This is the bird as of today the 11th January tucking in to its 5 apple, and very handsome it is.
