We get a great many hedgehogs visiting to drink
from the water bowl at night. We therefore thought it might be a nice
idea to build a Hedgehog Box, this could be used for Hibernating or
possibly nesting.
On this night one discovers our newly made
hedgehog box complete with infrared camera.
Here it is all snug and warm.
A couple of days later when the temperature
starts to drop Hoggie decides to install some more bedding
The first of many leaves
More leaves start to arrive
And even more
After a few hours sleep Hoggie nips out for a
good drink
Another drink and something to eat at 4.33am
Our Hoggie was hibernated in the box right
through November and the first part of December. Then it disappeared
for about ten days.
Then as if a New Years resolution, Hoggie came back on January the 1st.
In truth it was probably scared out of
some other hiding place by the local fireworks display.
When you see the pictures on the web its
hard to believe its in there but it is.
This is a video clip of the hedgehog
re-building its nest
A Rat recently popped in for a sniff but left as
soon as it realized the box was occupied.
The Hedgehog left the nest for a drink on
the 14 of February, the first one it has had since starting
incubation on January the 1st
Another larger Hoggie came to see if the
box was occupied
In this video you can see the larger Hogg
checking out the existing occupant
As you can see they both stayed and as its
quite warm, with the heat from the camera plus the extra body heat,
they are both well exposed.
