"Bluey" as we
named her, started appearing in our garden back in February.
We had only installed these boxes about a week before and she
started showing an interest in them straight away.
I know its hard to tell a male from a female and I know there must
have been one but I cant say I noticed him at all, he certainly did
not stay around to see his brood grow.
16 April 2003
"Bluey" started nesting in the tree box gathering moss from the bottom
of the garden and making numerous trips back and forth to the bird
box.
I started videoing
the events from our bedroom window and at this point wished we had a
camera in the nest.
The idea then came to me, to extend a small microphone to the nest
box, and plug it into the video camera, that way at least, we could
hear what was going on inside, even if we could not see
This fascinating if rather poor quality
video clip, recorded from our bedroom window, inspired us to want to
see more and hear more of what went on inside a nesting box
The next day she
changed her mind and started nesting in another box on the wall of the
house, I thought perhaps we had put her off with installing the
microphone. This carried on during the bank holiday weekend.
Then on the twenty
first of April Easter Monday our nearest neighbours had a party, the
noise from this, made her change back to the tree box.
She worked like a beaver all the rest of that day.
On the twenty second
I checked the box and great chunks of hair had appeared so I guess
someone had a make over that day.
No wonder she was
in a rush for on the twenty third she laid the first egg.
She continued as far as I know to lay one egg per day and I have
some pictures of these.
