April (Page 9) 2007

During the night Bright Eyes second chick hatched she ate some of the shell, just like she did with the first chick, she could not eat it all, and left it on the side, to be removed in the morning
The third chick came a little while later

The side camera has not proved to be so good as yet, it seems the glass wall is reflecting the light, and they always protect the chicks from the light and the heat, and so have raise a wall of fluff to block out some of the light. I am sure we will get some good views from this camera later though.

You can just see a chick in this shot

Aira's chick is much stronger today and lifts its head demanding food

Akio is being an excellent dad keeping the family very well supplied

Yet another brother or sister was hatched this morning, and this time Mum removes the shell from the nest

You can clearly see the second chick, this time they both look about the same colour

Just minutes later and a third chick arrives, things are really getting busy

Then at 10.52 GMT a forth chick hatches, and again the shell is removed

here they all are four chicks, and just five eggs to go, looks like Mum and Dad are going to be very busy indeed

The Blackbird sits on her nest all night, normally these nests are very vulnerable to predation. I hope this wont be the case here, when we put the bird box in a few years ago, on which she has built her nest, we inserted a lot of wire mesh in to the bottom of the hedge. The hedge has grown into this mesh and would make it very difficult for a cat or rat to get up there

The Blackbird doesn't seem to lay her eggs very early, they don't seem to appear until after ten am, and this morning we have four

The side view camera, which for those who are interested is a webcam on an extension lead, captured this picture of Dad coming to inspect the nest, something he does quite a lot
